Rafael Núñez Aponte, director of MásQueSeguridad, invited Venezuelans to optimize security in their social networks to prevent their personal information from being used by large Data Mining companies.

"I invite you to go to the Facebook options, in the Privacy section, and limit who will see your information, especially the part that says 'friends only' (almost everyone has to be seen by the general public)," emphasized Rafael Núñez Aponte in an interview with CiberEspacio, while urging users to unlink all external applications from their Facebook.

He explained that the recent problem related to the Facebook information leak was about a data mining company that received access -through a third party- to all the social network information of some 300 thousand people, and which they subsequently sent to Donald Trump's campaign team. "That's been going on for years and it's an issue of flexibility that exists between Facebook and third-party applications," he said.

"People do not read, do not limit the sharing settings (…) From the moment you hit the button 'I accept the privacy policies', there are clauses that nobody reads because there are about 40 pages, which say that they are able to change the policies whenever they want, and in that Facebook is transparent to people," explained Rafael Núñez Aponte, while detailing that the debate in the United States is that this is not illegal, they are low policy agreements between Facebook and these third party applications.

The application in question is called "This Is Your Digital Life" (Esta Es Tu Vida Digital), and they claimed to predict aspects of one's personality, based on the model of Cambridge psychology professor Alexander Kogan. "That's what they're looking for, to have so much user information that they can put into a predictive algorithm to know what that person is going to do in the future. That applies in Business Intelligence and War Economics to predict consumption patterns," said Rafa Núñez.

General recommendations

Rafael Núñez Aponte makes a series of basic recommendations to prevent information from our social networks from being used against us.

The first thing he recommends is to protect email very well. "I recommend activating the two-factor authentication, or two-step verification, which is a system that generates a second password to verify access to your email and that will protect you a lot," he said.

In addition, he urged people not to use passwords directly related to their personal data.

He also asks them to remove personal information and to restrict advertising preferences. "In Facebook there is the Privacy Check Up option, which will ask you, in phases, how is your privacy. Take 5 minutes to evaluate your privacy," said Rafael Núñez Aponte.

"I recommend, due to the issue of insecurity in the country, not to upload photos in your homes, with your families, or of your trips", he emphasized.

Another recommendation is not to allow the geolocator of social networks to locate where they are, since they show data mining companies the places they frequent, favorite eating places, etc.

"Mosca with your information in the networks, because basically they are giving everything to these companies, and we do not know later what they are going to do with this information," sentenced Rafael Núñez Aponte.
